Minister opens Seniors Expo in the Hunter

16 November 2011

Minister for Ageing Andrew Constance and the Member for Swansea Garry Edwards will officially open a Seniors Expo in Doyalson today, featuring stalls and information from public sector and non-government organisations about services in the Lake Macquarie and Wyong areas.

Mr Constance said the Expo was an opportunity to learn more about NSW Home Care, Home and Community Care and the Community Care Access Point - designed to help people access these valuable services - and the NSW Seniors Card.

“It also provides a forum to celebrate the vital role seniors play in local communities, especially in the Hunter,” Mr Constance said.

“Older people make a significant contribution to others who need support in the community, especially through volunteering in Ageing, Disability and Home Care-funded services.”

“I congratulate Garry Edwards on putting this Expo together. It’s a fantastic opportunity for seniors to come along, get advice and be informed of the services that are at their disposal.”

Mr Edwards said the Expo will showcase the services available to seniors to help them go about their day-to-day lives.

“It’s important for seniors to be up to date with the latest information that will enable them to live active and healthy lives,” Mr Edwards said.

“I encourage local seniors to come along and make the most of the exhibitions.”

The O’Farrell Government is committed to recognising the enormous contribution older residents make, with NSW celebrating its inaugural Grandparents Day last month.

The Government is also developing a Whole-of-Government Ageing Strategy, which will be implemented as part of a holistic approach to social policy.

The Seniors Expo will be held between 10am and 4pm today 16 November 2011 at the Doyalson Wyee RSL, Pacific Highway, Doyalson.
