Multicultural communities to have their say over delivery of disability services

10 October 2011

Comprehensive consultation sessions will be held with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities this month to progress the O’Farrell Government’s disability reforms through Stronger Together 2.

NSW Minister for Disability Services Andrew Constance said the consultations would involve 17 CALD communities to ensure people had a chance to have their say about the introduction of a person centred approach for people with a disability.

“The consultations mark a further step in the consultation process which began with 500 people attending the Living Life My Way summit in July,” Mr Constance said.

“Since that time more than 100 consultations have been held throughout the State.”

“The O’Farrell Government is committed to the introduction of a person centred approach which places people with a disability at the centre of decision making.”

“This important reform is key to giving people with a disability control over their own lives and futures. Every individual has the right to choice, respect and the best support services that can be offered.”

“By the end of 2014, anyone receiving disability services will have the option of using an individualised and portable funding arrangement,” Mr Constance said.

People who cannot attend a consultation can make a submission by either:

  • Calling 1800 605 489 (interpreters are available upon request),
  • Emailing pcaconsultations@facs.nsw.gov.au or
  • Writing to the Manager, Person Centred Approaches Team, Ageing, Disability and Home Care, Department of Family and Community Services, Level 5, 83 Clarence Street, Sydney NSW 2000.

Verbal and written submissions must be received by 31 October 2011.

People requiring help to make a submission or those who would like further information about opportunities to participate in the consultation process can contact 1800 605 489. For more information about the person centred approach go to: www.adhc.nsw.gov.au/pca
