A media release from the Minister for Women - Hundreds of remarkable women nominated for NSW Women of the Year Awards

2 April 2012

Minister for Women Pru Goward said over 200 nominations have now been received for the two statewide 2012 NSW Women of the Year Awards.

“We have received an impressive response from the NSW community who took time from their busy lives to recognise the inspirational achievements of women across NSW,” Ms Goward said.

“Nominations for the statewide awards closed over the weekend with more than 200 nominations received. Labor’s NSW Woman of the Year Awards in 2011 only managed 75 nominations.

“This year, it’s been easier for people to nominate, and we’ve also handed over the choice for the Women of the Year People’s Choice - Community Hero Award to the people of NSW. We have enlisted some fantastic community leaders for the awards selection panel.

“Nominations were submitted from across NSW, from Albury to Nyngan, Grafton to Cronulla, showcasing a great range of women who have made a significant contribution to their local community – including the quiet achievers, local heroes and volunteers among us who deserve to be recognised.”

Ms Goward said she was looking forward to working with the other panel members to choose who is to be named the Premier’s NSW Woman of the Year and to select a shortlist of candidates for the People’s Choice – Community Hero Award.

“I’m excited to start assessing the nominations but I know it is going to be a difficult task to decide who is shortlisted and ultimately who the winners will be,” Ms Goward said.

“That’s why I’m especially pleased the NSW public will decide the Community Hero winner.

“Members of the community will find profiles of the shortlisted nominees online at www.womenoftheyear.nsw.gov.au from Monday 23 April 2012 and will have three weeks to vote from the five women who have been shortlisted.”
