New respite centre opens in Tamworth

7 September 2012

NSW Minister for Disability Services Andrew Constance was today joined by the Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson to officially open Dominic House, a 'home away from home' for people with disability, their families and carers who need access to respite.

"Taking a break from a caring role is so important, not only for the wellbeing of the carer, but for the person with disability too," Mr Constance said.

"Too often we see carers having to make the heart-wrenching decision to no longer care for their loved one because they are simply worn out."

"This new facility has been modified to better suit the needs of the people who use the service and potentially offer additional respite to the community."

Dominic House was a former convent and has fifteen bedrooms, two of which can provide high support to people with severe disabilities.

The building has been upgraded to provide wheelchair access, support bars, widened doorways and access ramps.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said the respite services at Dominic House will help ease the pressure on carers in the community.

"Carers make enormous sacrifices for their loved ones and the NSW Government is committed to supporting them by ensuring the appropriate services in place," Mr Anderson said.

"Over 84 families in Tamworth access supports from Challenge Disability Services and this new facility will assist in responding to the increased demand we are experiencing."

Challenge Disability Services invested $1.1 million towards the upgrade. The organisation receives funding of nearly $12 million from the NSW Government to operate respite services as well as supported accommodation and day programs throughout regional NSW.
