$600,000 Boost for Illawarra Respite Care

3 September 2013

Minister for Disability Services and the Illawarra John Ajaka has announced a major boost to respite care services in the Illawarra.

Mr Ajaka said $592,000 will be provided to The Disability Trust based in Fairy Meadow to significantly increase in the number of respite care places.

“The Disability Trust provides services to more than 300 children with disability and their families in the Illawarra.” he said.

“Carers make enormous sacrifices for their loved ones and the NSW Government is committed to supporting them by ensuring the appropriate supports are in place.

“Each flexible respite place will provide a minimum of 168 hours of respite support for families and carers who are caring for a person with disability,” Mr Ajaka said.

Member for Heathcote Lee Evans said the funds will be directed to the Ageing, Disability and Home Care, Flexible Respite Program operated by The Disability Trust.

“The Trust is committed to achieving quality outcomes for people with disability through its respite programs such as Link to Leisure and Teen Time which promote greater social inclusion and participation in recreation activities.

“Flexible respite also covers a range of activities which can be carried out either in the person’s home or in other community settings,” Mr Evans said.

“It assists in supporting and maintaining the relationship with the carer while also providing a positive experience for the person with disability.

“The benefits include providing the opportunity to experience a different environment outside of the home, and build relationships with other people.”

Investment in respite forms part of the NSW Government’s commitment under Stronger Together 2, the largest increase in funding for disability services in the state’s history.
