Innovation Awards give power to the people

24 May 2013

Minister for Disability Services Andrew Constance has reminded people to get their nominations in for the 2013 NSW Disability Industry Innovation Awards.

"This is an exciting opportunity to showcase the kind of expertise and quality of ideas which enable choice and give more control to people with disability," Mr Constance said.

"The awards are about celebrating individuals and organisations who work tirelessly to transform the way services and supports are delivered."

This year a new category has been added.

The People's Choice Award will be nominated by people with disability and/or their families and carers and awarded by Minister Constance for a strong commitment to person centred practices.

"It promises to be an incredibly competitive category," Mr Constance said.

Other categories for nomination include Innovation in independent living, Leadership in promoting community engagement and employment opportunities, and Excellence in the use of technology.

"Now more than ever, innovation and new ideas will be the driving force in ensuring a successful rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)," Mr Constance said.

The Innovation Awards were launched last year and are an initiative of the NSW Government in partnership with National Disability Services NSW (NDS).

Nominations must be submitted to NDS NSW by 5pm on 31 May 2013.

This year nominations can include volunteers, self nominations and private workers.

The Innovation Awards ceremony will be held in Sydney in September 2013.
