New App connects seniors with discounts

10 March 2014

Minister for Ageing John Ajaka has launched the free NSW Seniors Card app – giving tech savvy seniors instant access to discounts from more than 3,500 stores state wide.

“Seniors will now be able to use their smartphones or mobile devices to access savings on the go,” Mr Ajaka said.

“The new app is free, available at the Apple App Store and Google Play Store and connects seniors with special offers available at nearby retailers, tradespeople and other service providers.

“The app maps out discounts, gives a description of the retailer, provides directions and a photo of the street view to ensure seniors can locate stores and businesses.

“Seniors need not worry if they cannot access the directory through their phone, as they can obtain a copy by calling 13 77 88, or by heading online to www.seniorscard.nsw.gov.au.

“The directory and new app are part of the NSW Government’s ongoing commitment to improve the way it delivers information to more than one million members of the NSW Seniors Card program.”

Minister for Finance and Services Andrew Constance said the NSW Seniors Card app was developed as part of the Apps4NSW initiative.
“For a number of years NSW has been at the forefront of app development,” Mr Constance said.

“The initiative, which is part of the NSW Government’s ICT Strategy, has proved to be been very successful, and many of the apps developed as part of the initiative have been downloaded tens of thousands of times.

“The next Apps4NSW Challenge is now open and developers are invited to use data and information to develop apps for Department of Education and Communities and for the Office of Environment and Heritage.

“Interested developers will have an opportunity to pitch their ideas to a judging panel in April. Successful entrants will then be required develop and launch an app for iOS and/or Andriod.”
