My Choice Matters, the NSW Consumer Development Fund

On 15 August 2012, the Minister for Disability Services, the Hon. Andrew Constance MP, announced that the NSW Government was establishing My Choice Matters, the NSW Consumer Development Fund (MCM).

Feedback from participants in the 2011/12 Living Life My Way consultation process highlighted the importance of investing in strategies to build the confidence and competence of individuals, families and carers to support the expansion of individualised support arrangements as NSW transitions to the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

MCM was established in response to this feedback. Its purpose is to prepare people with disability, their families and carers to participate confidently in a disability system based on self directed supports and individualised budgets. While there is widespread support and enthusiasm for these reforms, many people are uncertain about how they will cope with these momentous changes.

A total of $5 million has been allocated to MCM and is being administered by the NSW Council for Intellectual Disability (NSW CID) under the direction of the MCM Board.

Advisory Group

The MCM Advisory Group has been set up and held its first meeting in June 2013. The Advisory Group is playing a critical role in supporting the development, implementation and evaluation of MCM.

The 10-member advisory group includes people with different disabilities, families and carers from diverse backgrounds as well as representation from consumer organisations.
