Leilani - Enrolled Nurse
I have been an Enrolled Nurse at a group home in South West Sydney since March 2005. My biggest challenge is to help our residents to learn more and more and to help them overcome the fear of doing the simplest things that most of us take for granted.
I can see lots of small changes in our residents through the continued efforts of the staff. They are getting more used to living a fuller life, and those with some difficult behaviour are slowly but surely improving too. I think that the momentum is building up and we are gradually involving our residents more and more in the community which is really empowering for them.
Why do you think ADHC is a good employer?
I really feel that ADHC looks after its employees in many ways, not just in good pay and conditions. I have a great manager who adapts our shifts so that we can manage both our work life and our own family responsibilities.
I love the regular training such as seminars and in-house courses, for example, in Dental Health and Work Health and Safety. I have recently completed the Department's week long training in developing Individual Plans for Residents. The training not only increases my skills but allows me to meet lots of people in the disability and other health care areas.
