Planning for the future

Planning for the future is important in case you, or a family member, lose the ability to make decisions about:

  • money
  • health care
  • lifestyle.
There are lots of things you can put in place now to make sure that if something happens to you, your family will know exactly what you want them to do.

Planning Ahead Kit

The Planning Ahead Kit is a practical resource we have developed to help you plan for the future.

The Kit can help you choose someone to make financial, health and lifestyle decisions for you if you lose the capacity to make decisions yourself.

It deals with important issues such as:

  • Wills
  • funeral funds
  • enduring guardianship
  • advance care directive - this is a document that states your wishes regarding your future health care. It comes into effect only if you are unable to make your own decisions
  • Power of Attorney.

While no one expects to lose the capacity to manage their own affairs, many people feel comfort in knowing that they have made arrangements for a trusted relative or friend to make decisions on their behalf if something does happen.

For Aboriginal people

Taking care of business is a kit developed to inform Aboriginal people of the options for planning for their future financial, health and family decisions.

These booklets are part of a resource kit that also includes a DVD. To order a copy of the DVD, or hard copies of the booklets, please contact the Office for Ageing.

Other languages

We have also developed a planning ahead resource kit for people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Currently the kit is available in Arabic, Croatian and Italian:
