Nursing and Health Care

The Nursing and Health Care Core Standards can be used for any nurse supporting people with disability, giving them the basic required knowledge to be able to do their job and be able to demonstrate this.

i) Person-Centred Health Care Assessments and the Development of Health Care Plans: will outline the different health care assessments to use which provides systematic nursing care when supporting people with disability ensuring standardised nursing practice, and consistent documentation. It will also build upon a practitioners' knowledge, understanding and confidence to collaboratively complete a health care plan.

A practice package and appraisal have been developed for Person Centred Health Care Assessments and the Development of Health Care Plans:

ii) Communication and Behaviour Support: highlights the complications that nurses are faced with daily when working with people who have difficulty communicating. It covers the importance of using good communication strategies and builds participants' knowledge of the plans, principles and strategies put in place to support complex behaviours when supporting people with disability.

A practice package and appraisal have been developed for Communication and Behaviour Support:

iii) Working with People with Chronic and Complex Health Care Needs: provides general information on medication management, admission and discharge to and from hospital, and transition of children with disability who have chronic and complex health needs to adult services. It also provides an overview of the broad range of complex health issues a nurse supporting people with disability will encounter.

A practice package and appraisal have been developed for Working with People with Chronic and Complex Health Care Needs:

iv) Mealtime Management for Nurses: provides nurses with general information on some of the swallowing and mealtime issues health professionals face when supporting people with an disability and how to manage these.

Optional Additional Core Standards

Supporting Sexuality

This core standard supports practitioners to understand the importance of sexual expression for people with disability. It ensures that these practitioners are well placed to support individuals to engage in valued and meaningful roles and occupations related to sexuality. An optional appraisal is available.

Supporting Sleep

This core standard provides a practice guide for practitioners so that they are equipped to identify sleep issues and support people with disability to experience adequate sleep. An optional appraisal is available.
