In the community

Most people with a disability live independently in their own homes with their families.

Some people with a disability need to live in an environment where they can receive services and support from specialist staff to help with their daily needs.

Living in the community

In NSW, there are a number of different types of housing for people with a disability who need support. The amount of support they receive is matched to their needs.

Housing for people with a disability is usually located in residential neighbourhoods that are close to community services like:

  • public transport
  • shopping
  • work
  • medical care and
  • other activities.

Living in the community with the right level of support allows a person with a disability to enjoy the experiences that most other people take for granted.
